I like this! My video highlight of the day…

I’ve always enjoy Coen Brothers movies, my personal favourite being… erm… how the hell can you pick a favourite? Almost all of them could sit happily as a favourite… it almost depends on your mood! The Coen’s have a very distinct style that shows in everything they make, with ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ being no exception. But what this trailer shows me is that here the Coen’s are treading territory very close to their hearts… I don’t know what it is, but I think I love everything about what I see here…

I like this! My video highlight of the day….

As mystery trailers go, this one is one of my favourites. Had not heard of the film until I stumbled across the trailer, and it’s right up my street. Space exploration is one of my top subjects and although you could argue we’ve done the whole ‘something on Europa’ thing (2010: Odyssey Two), I like what I see here…

One-Line Review: GREAT EXPECTATIONS

A good turn by Ralph Fiennes and some nice cinematography is about all that’s on offer in yet another take on Dickens’ classic tale…

★★☆☆☆

THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON AN EARLY TEST SCREENING OF THE MOVIE AND SO DOES NOT REFLECT THE FINALIZED VERSION THAT IS TO BE RELEASED IN THEATERS… BUT AS IT DIDN’T REALLY DO ENOUGH TO PIQUE MY INTEREST ME THE FIRST TIME AROUND, I DOUBT I’LL BE GOING TO SEE IT AGAIN.

My advice? Do yourself a favor and seek out David Lean’s superior craftsmanship…

Proof-of-concept…

A lot of movies can require what is known as ‘proof of concept’ before a project is green-lit by a studio. Any first-time filmmaker will probably need to fashion one to bolster their project ideas, be it artwork, or a trailer or presentation reel. But it’s not only the first-timers who sometimes need to convince the studio. I’ve seen quite a few proof-of-concept trailers for movies, from really basic affairs, taking clips from other movies (to get the vibe of the project they’re trying to sell) and setting them to music from other/the same movies… to quite extravagant and clearly pricey pieces, fully designed with costumes, props and sets. I will say though, that none worked quite as brilliantly as this proof-of-concept piece from Rian Johnson for his movie Looper. It’s taking shots from other movies, sure… it’s taking music from other movies, sure… but it’s held together with some illustration and a great bit of narration and actually stops you guessing what movie each shot is from…

It actually makes me want to see this movie (I’ve seen it… just want to see it again now!). If I was a studio exec, I’d be sold.

Old press…

A long time ago, (right here on planet Earth) my friend Jonathan Hall and I entered a competition in Total Film magazine. It was a short film awards competition and there were a number of categories you could enter. We had had an idea brewing for a long while about a 80’s zombie action movie that would have its tongue so firmly in cheek that it hurt. But this was a feature-length idea and hardly suitable for any short film competition. However this one offered the opportunity to craft a trailer for a non-existent movie. Bingo! So we made it and entered it. You can find the trailer we made above. However, this tale doesn’t have quite the happy end you might think. We didn’t win the competition, (Noooooooo!!!!!) but we did get a name-check in Total Film (Awesome!!!)! It was very odd, picking up the magazine in the newsagent, strolling through the pages only to find your name in print. Now, we didn’t win the competition, but what we did do is write the full-length feature screenplay, currently being touted. See? Not quite the ending we thought when entering the competition, but a more productive one. Why do I bring this up now? Well… I happened to stumble (okay, I searched for it in case it was archived online) and found a scan of that very page we were mentioned on. It just brought a smile. Check it out here…
